title: Custom domains
description: Serve your project on your own domain with an automatic HTTPS certificate.
---

Every project is reachable at `<slug>.ztls.app` from its first successful deploy. To serve it
on your own domain, add the domain and point its DNS at Zeitlos.

## Adding a domain

:::steps

1. **Open Settings → Domains** and add the hostname, e.g. `app.example.com`.

2. **Create the DNS record** shown for that hostname at your DNS provider — see below.

3. **Wait for verification**

Zeitlos checks DNS automatically and the domain moves from pending through to active on
its own. You can trigger a manual scan if you added your DNS records. Be aware that DNS records
might need a short time to propagate.

4. **HTTPS is issued for you**

A certificate is provisioned once the domain verifies, and renewed automatically.

## Which record to create

**For a subdomain** such as `app.example.com` — a single `CNAME`:

| Type | Name | Value |
| ------- | ----- | --------------------------------- |
| `CNAME` | `app` | the target shown in the dashboard |

**For an apex domain** such as `example.com` — an apex can't hold a `CNAME`, so pick one:

| Type | Name | Value |
| ----------------- | ---- | --------------------------------- |
| `ALIAS` / `ANAME` | `@` | the target shown in the dashboard |
| `A` | `@` | the IP shown in the dashboard |

Whenever your DNS provider supports `ALIAS`/`ANAME` prefer using this.

> [!NOTE]
> The exact target and IP are shown next to the domain in the dashboard. Use those values
> rather than copying them from anywhere else.
